Post Halloween Apocalyptic World View – this mix is dedicated to the marketing team at OrangeSoda. The mix is framed by 8bit selections from the original Castlevania (at least in the US) on the NES platform.
2010 Halloween playlist. Lots of Misfits. Some of the Sonics, Sabbath, and the Smiths. The original version of “Lake of Fire” by the Meat Puppets. Also, the original version of “Dead Souls” by Joy Division (so much better than the watery disco depression of NIN). I amazingly found a couple songs from actual witch doctors circa 1975 in east Africa. Wolf Parade and TV On The Radio add a couple songs from the most recent decade to counteract the contributions from early country (Hank Williams) and Chicago blues (Otis Spann). It’s long.
A second volume from last year. Los Campesinos is one of my favorite new bands. They are Welsh. Or part whale as my 10yr old daughter describes her genetic soup.
A twisted year deserves a twisted collection. This best of 2009 playlist is too long, and probably too uncomfortable. It is spiked with a couple songs from the 1920s that seemed to fit so they are also included — Mississippi John Hurt’s “Avalon Blues” and the Carter Family’s “Wildwood Flower”.
“I Don’t Intend to Spend Christmas Without You” was a hit Christmas single for the French singer Claudine Longet in 1968. She shot and killed her skier boyfriend in the spring of 1976. Supposedly he was cheating on her. That version of the song is included here as well as the recent cover by St. Etienne. Also included is the Stones song about Claudine. Only available on bootlegs.
